Reflective Piece

Throughout this semester we were given the opportunity to learn different techniques of writing.  We were given the chance to make a blog and write different projects that pertain to the media and online writing. Things such as interactive pieces, hypertext, and hyperlinks, with these we were able to use the things we learned in class to help us write them. We used credibility, readability, and even scanability to help our pieces be better than the writing that we would have done before learning these techniques.

The four pieces that I chose for my e portfolio are, my writing process piece, IPhone 6 Press Release, Former Dictaor Sues, and my group interactive Derek Jeter project.

With my writing process piece I was able to sit back and think about how I start to write and how things are done. With this I was able to look back and think how I could make things better when it comes to my writing and when it comes to being able to get my homework and papers done.

The IPhone 6 release was a piece where I was able to write like a professional and be able to see and try to relate to those that have to write press releases for technology. This for me was not something that was easy but I was Impressed with what I was able to write at the end. It was hard to get the specs into the piece when all you want to do is base it off of your own opinion but, you have to make it a general statement about the product which is hard.

The next piece I chose was the Former Dictator Sues Call of Duty. This piece was something where we learned how to layer our pieces. Putting videos, pictures, subtitles and anything else to make it easier for the reader to scan through the piece.

Lastly I chose the group interactive project. This my partner and I picked Derek Jeter as our interactive topic. We started with the beginning and went to the point where his career was over and his last and final game. This we learned how to use timelines, quizzes, slideshows, and even google maps to make the piece more presentable and be able to have the read “interact” with the writing piece itself.

With each and every project or writing piece given in this class I feel they all have helped me grow, and prosper into a better writer then I was. I now have learned to understand different types of writing, different ways to make the piece or readable, and ways to help the reader be able to scan to the information in the piece they are looking for.

This class has helped me with others as I have taken other online writing classes and I now can understand what things are when it comes to media online and news online. With electronic media I never understood or thought about how hard it could be to write for the media online, but doing these projects has opened my horizon to understanding more about what is going on and the entire process that needs to be done before something is published online.

I liked this class and being able to learn new things. I feel I can now accomplish better writing online and even maybe start my own blog. This class has helped me in a great deal with understand how to make it better for myself and for the reader while looking at my piece of work.

Derek Jeter

On June 26, 1974, a star by the name of Derek Jeter was born.  Little did the world know, what a legend he would become.

Jeter was drafted by the Yankees into their Minor League System and made his Major League baseball debut on May 29, 1995.  However, he got sent back down to the minors, where he admits that he cried repeatedly thinking he had ruined all hopes of his career.

Putting in a tremendous amount of work, Jeter was put on the 1996 roster as the starting shortstop, under manager Joe Torre.  Everyone doubted a rookie starting at shortstop, but he quickly put those doubts to rest.  He was the 1996 Rookie of the Year, and helped the Yankees win yet another World Series championship title.

Along with his first and second All Star Game nomination, Jeter went on to win his second and third World Series title with the Yankees in 1998 and 1999.

THE MAGNIFICENT MILLINEUM

The year 2000 proved to be a phenomenal one for Jeter.  Along with winning M.V.P. in his third All Star Game, he won M.V.P. for his fourth World Series run.  Jeter and the Yankees would go on to win their fourth title in the past five years beating the Mets out for the championship.


In 2001, Jeter earned the nickname, "Mr. November" after hitting a home run during the World Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks as the clock struck midnight on November 1st.

In June of 2003, George Steinbrenner made Jeter the official Yankees’ Captain.

In 2004, Derek Jeter won his first Gold Glove Award, which he made clear he deserved during his dive into the stands against Boston on July 1st, 2004.

In March of 2009, Jeter was named the Captain of Team USA for the World Baseball Classic.  By August that same season, Jeter had tied and broke the record for most career hits by a shortstop.  On September 11^th of the 2009 season, Jeter tied Lou Gehrig on the Yankees’ career hits list.  The Yankees went on to win another World Series championship title that year, Jeter’s fifth one.

On July 9, 2011 Derek Jeter joined the 3000 hit club.  Going 5 for 5 that day, Jeter homered on his 3000^th hit, making him the sixth ever shortstop to do so in MLB history.

Sadly, in the 2012 ALCS, Jeter went down with an ankle injury.  In game 1, Jeter broke his left ankle diving for a ground ball in the 12^th inning.  Jeter would go on to miss the rest of the postseason as well as most of the following season in 2013.  He returned briefly in July of 2013 but then had a quad issue and was put on the DL.  In September of 2013, the Yankees said Jeter was out regardless of what their post season looked like.

THE BEGINNING OF THE END

In February of 2014, as Jeter and the Yankees were preparing for the new season, Jeter announced that after the 2014 season, he would be retiring.  The 2014 season was a special one for Jeter and for fans, truly embracing every moment along the way.  From his final home opener to his last All Star Game, to Derek Jeter Day on September 7^th, Jeter confirmed how special he really is.  On September 25^th, Jeter ‘s final hit in the Yankee cathedral was a walk off RBI.  Going out in true Derek Jeter fashion, he led the team to a victory win. 

Former Dictator Sues Call of Duty Game Maker for Using Manuel Noriega Character

 

 

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani is joining a video game company's legal fight against disgraced Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega, who is suing Activision over his inclusion in one of its popular "Call of Duty" games.

Activision Blizzard Inc. announced Monday that Giuliani and his firm will ask a Los Angeles judge to dismiss Noriega's lawsuit, which claims his likeness was used without permission in 2012's"Call of Duty: Black Ops II."

Giuiliani told The Associated Press he took the case because he doesn't want the imprisoned Noriega to profit from his crimes, which include convictions for murder, drug trafficking and money laundering. Also, Giuiliani said that if the lawsuit is upheld, it could give historical figures and their heirs veto power over their depiction in books, television, movies and video games.

Noriega sued Activision in July, claiming the company depicted him as a "kidnapper, murderer and enemy of the state."

The lawsuit contends Noriega's inclusion in the game increased Activision's profits from "Black Ops II." The game earned more than $1 billion in sales within 15 days of its release. Noreiga's attorney William T. Gibbs declined to comment on Giuliani's statements.

Giuliani’s Involvement

In addition to leading New York City's government for two terms - including during the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks - Giuliani is a former U.S. attorney and ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008. In private practice, Giuliani worked as a First Amendment lawyer, representing major news outlets such as the Wall Street Journal and the financial magazine Barron's.

Activision said in a release announcing Giuliani's involvement in the case that the company plans to argue the game's depiction of Noriega is covered by free speech provisions.

 

Who Else Has Been In The Game?

The company noted its games have featured historical figures such as President John F. Kennedy and Fidel Castro.

The story line for "Black Ops II" involved the waning years of the Cold War in the 1980s, with Noriega aiding the game's key villain. The ex-dictator appears in less than 1 percent of the game and was not featured in any of its marketing, Giuliani said.

In real life, Noriega was toppled in 1989 by a U.S. invasion and served a 17-year drug trafficking sentence in the United States. He later was convicted in France of money laundering, and that country repatriated him to Panama in December 2011. Noriega, 80, is serving a 60-year sentence for murder, embezzlement and corruption.

Activision  

Activision has faced lawsuits before over its use of well-known people in its video games. The band No Doubt sued the game maker after learning their digital avatars in "Band Hero" could be used to perform other artists' music. The band settled the case before trial, and terms were never disclosed.

Writing Process Piece

Writing Process? When it comes to me having to start writing an assignment, I try my hardest to be organized and get a system down to write the paper. A personal success to me is just being able to get the paper done in the end by its due date.

I usually plan out my homework and assignments on a week to week or day to day basis. So I give myself a day or more to write something and then the next day I start on the next one. Being under pressure has always helped me get my writing done compared to having months, I will always wait at least a week or two close to the end. Depending on the assignment I try to do as much research as possible and cover the papers with highlighter marks to be able to use key points and worthy facts.

I usually make a brainstorm paper with bullet points so I can write out what each paragraph is going to be about so I can skip around my paper if I really have to, and so it makes it easier so I don’t get stuck. When it comes to writing something that is required I always have those moments where I am dumbfounded and just can’t seem to type anything else onto the paper. So writing out what will be in each paragraph makes it much easier for me to skip around and just copy and paste the paragraphs where they are needed.

The style of my writing is more informational with facts and information that is researched. Depending on the topic and how much I know about it usually I do all the research. I do tend to write how I speak so grammar and punctuation can always be my downfall. Which is why peer editing would be something that is entirely helpful for my writing.

When it comes to personal writing everything that is supposed to be done, I do the total opposite. I tend to write short stories and poems during my free time and I am never thinking of what commas I am supposed to use. When I write personally I can just sit there and type I don’t get stuck it just comes to my mind and I write it out. Personal writing tends to be more enjoyable because there are no topics you have to search but just to write what you feel like. I guess I see my personal writing almost like free-lance writing.
